Arunachal's Crown: A 6-Day Tawang Circuit Adventure
Day 1: Journey to the Hills - Guwahati to Dirang
Drive from Guwahati to Dirang
Start your journey early from Guwahati. This is a long but incredibly scenic drive that takes you from the plains of Assam into the Eastern Himalayas. The route passes through lush forests and small towns. You will cross the border into Arunachal Pradesh at Bhalukpong.
Lunch En Route
Stop at a simple roadside dhaba or a small restaurant in a town like Tezpur or Bhalukpong for a traditional Assamese or North Indian lunch.
Check-in at Dirang Hotel
Arrive in the charming valley of Dirang by late evening. Check into your hotel and rest. Dirang is at a lower altitude than Tawang, making it an ideal stop for acclimatization.
Dinner in Dirang
Enjoy a simple yet hearty dinner at your hotel's restaurant. Try some local vegetable preparations or a warm bowl of soup to combat the cold.
Day 2: The High Pass - Dirang to Tawang
Drive from Dirang to Tawang
After breakfast, continue your ascent towards Tawang. This part of the journey is spectacular, featuring winding mountain roads and dramatic landscapes. The main highlight is crossing the Sela Pass.
Cross Sela Pass & Sela Lake
Reach the Sela Pass, situated at an altitude of 13,700 feet. In January, the pass will be covered in a thick blanket of snow, creating a surreal, white landscape. Stop by the frozen, sacred Sela Lake near the pass.
Jaswant Garh War Memorial
Pay homage to the brave Indian soldier, Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, who fought valiantly in the 1962 Indo-China War. The memorial is maintained by the Indian Army and tells a story of incredible courage.
Check-in at Tawang Hotel
Arrive in Tawang and check into your pre-booked hotel. Settle in and take it easy for the rest of the evening to acclimatize to the high altitude (approx. 10,000 feet).
Dinner with Local Flavors
Have dinner at your hotel or a local restaurant in the main market. Try some authentic Monpa cuisine like Thukpa (noodle soup) or Momos to warm you up.
Day 3: Monasteries and Memorials of Tawang
Tawang Monastery (Galden Namgyal Lhatse)
Visit the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world. Perched atop a hill, it offers panoramic views of the Tawang valley. Explore its vast complex, ancient scriptures, and the giant statue of Lord Buddha. Try to witness the morning prayers for a serene experience.
Giant Buddha Statue
Visit the towering Tawang Tso (Giant Buddha Statue) which overlooks the town. The site offers peace and tranquility, along with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and Tawang Chu valley.
Lunch in Tawang Town
Head to the Tawang market for lunch. There are several small eateries offering a mix of Tibetan, Monpa, and North Indian food. A perfect opportunity to try more local delicacies.
Tawang War Memorial
In the evening, visit the Tawang War Memorial, a beautiful stupa dedicated to the martyrs of the 1962 war. The memorial is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the Indian Army. Don't miss the light and sound show that narrates the story of the battle.
Day 4: Journey to the Border - Bum La & Madhuri Lake
Excursion to Bum La Pass & High-Altitude Lakes
Embark on a thrilling journey towards the Indo-China border at Bum La Pass (15,200 ft). The route takes you through rugged terrain and past several stunning, frozen lakes like Pankang Teng Tso (PT Tso).
Madhuri Lake (Shonga-tser Lake)
Visit the famous Shonga-tser Lake, popularly known as Madhuri Lake after the Bollywood movie 'Koyla' was filmed here. The lake was formed by an earthquake and has a unique landscape with dead tree trunks emerging from its serene, frozen waters.
Backup Plan: Local Exploration
If Bum La Pass is closed due to snow, use the day to explore other nearby attractions. You can visit the Urgelling Gompa (birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama), the Anni Gompa (a nunnery), or simply spend more time around the beautiful PT Tso Lake.
Evening at Leisure and Dinner
Return to Tawang by late afternoon. Spend the evening exploring the local market for souvenirs like prayer flags or traditional masks. Enjoy a final dinner in Tawang.
Day 5: Journey Downhill - Tawang to Bomdila
Drive from Tawang to Bomdila
Start the return journey after an early breakfast. The drive back offers a different perspective of the landscapes you passed on your way up.
Nuranang Falls (Jang Falls)
Just a short drive from Tawang, make a stop at the spectacular Nuranang Falls. This 100-meter high waterfall is a breathtaking sight. You can walk down closer to the base to feel its spray.
Lunch at a Roadside Cafe
Stop for lunch at a small restaurant in one of the towns you pass through, like Jaswant Garh or Sela Pass, depending on your timing.
Check-in and Relax in Bomdila
Arrive in Bomdila by the evening. Check into your hotel and relax after the long drive. You can take a short walk around the main market if time and energy permit.
Day 6: Return to the Plains - Bomdila to Guwahati
Drive from Bomdila to Guwahati
Have an early breakfast and start your final drive back to Guwahati. The journey will take you back through the foothills and into the plains of Assam.
Lunch on the Highway
Stop for lunch at a dhaba or restaurant once you are back in the plains of Assam.
Departure from Guwahati
Arrive at Guwahati Airport (GAU) or Railway Station for your journey back home, filled with memories of the majestic Himalayas.
