En-route Stop at Umiam Lake
Just before reaching Shillong, stop at the majestic Umiam Lake, a vast man-made reservoir. The viewpoint offers a stunning panoramic vista. It's a perfect spot for your first photos together in the Northeast.
Check-in to a Romantic Retreat
Check into your hotel in Shillong. We recommend a property with scenic views and a cozy atmosphere to start your honeymoon.
Intimate Welcome Dinner
Enjoy a quiet, intimate dinner. Many upscale hotels in Shillong have excellent restaurants. Alternatively, explore Cafe Shillong for a blend of local and continental flavors in a cozy setting.
Day 2: Waterfalls and Living Bridges of Cherrapunji
Scenic Drive to Cherrapunji (Sohra)
After breakfast, embark on a day trip to Cherrapunji, known for its dramatic landscapes and record-breaking rainfall. The 1.5-2 hour drive offers stunning views of deep gorges and misty valleys.
Marvel at Nohkalikai Falls
Visit Nohkalikai Falls, the tallest plunge waterfall in India. The sheer drop into a turquoise-green pool is a mesmerizing and powerful sight. The tragic legend behind its name adds a layer of mystique.
Explore the Mawsmai Caves
Venture into the Mawsmai Caves, a network of limestone caves that are well-lit and easy to navigate. It's a short but fascinating experience to see the stalactite and stalagmite formations.
Lunch with a View
Have lunch at a local restaurant in Cherrapunji. Many offer simple but delicious Khasi food with views of the surrounding valleys.
Walk Across a Living Root Bridge
While the famous Double Decker bridge requires a long trek, there are several single-root bridges that are more accessible. Ask your driver to take you to one nearby for a unique photo opportunity and to witness this marvel of bio-engineering.
Return to Shillong
Drive back to Shillong as the sun begins to set, reflecting on the day's incredible natural sights.
Day 3: From Hills to Plains: Journey to Kaziranga
Drive from Shillong to Kaziranga National Park
After an early breakfast, check out and begin the long drive from the hills of Meghalaya to the plains of Assam. The journey takes approximately 7-8 hours, descending from the hills and passing through Assamese towns and paddy fields.
Check-in to a Jungle Lodge
Arrive in Kaziranga and check into your jungle lodge or resort. Choose a place that offers a blend of comfort and a connection with nature.
Dinner amidst Nature's Sounds
Relax and enjoy dinner at your lodge's restaurant. The ambiance is often serene, with the sounds of the jungle providing a natural soundtrack to your meal. Enjoy a traditional Assamese Thali.
Day 4: Wildlife Encounters in Kaziranga
Dawn Elephant Safari
Wake up before dawn for a magical elephant safari in the Western Range (Bagori) of the park. This is the best way to get up close to the magnificent one-horned rhinoceroses as they graze in the tall elephant grass.
Breakfast at the Lodge
Return to your lodge for a hearty breakfast and some time to relax and share photos from the morning's adventure.
Afternoon Jeep Safari
In the afternoon, embark on a jeep safari in the Central Range (Kohora) of the park. This range offers a different landscape and a great chance to spot rhinos, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, and a variety of bird species. You might even be lucky enough to spot a tiger.
Evening Cultural Show
Many resorts or local cultural centers host traditional Assamese Bihu dance performances in the evening. It's a vibrant and colorful way to experience the local culture.
Day 5: The Himalayan Ascent: Kaziranga to Dirang
Drive to Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh
This is the most demanding travel day. Start very early after breakfast for the 7-8 hour drive to Dirang. You will cross from Assam into Arunachal Pradesh at Bhalukpong, where your Inner Line Permits (ILP) will be checked. The road then begins its steep ascent into the mountains.
Check-in at Dirang
Arrive in the picturesque valley of Dirang, situated on the banks of the Kameng River. Check into your hotel and take the evening to acclimatize to the altitude (approx. 4,900 ft).
Simple Dinner in the Valley
Have a simple and warm dinner at your hotel. The local cuisine is influenced by Tibetan flavors. Try some momos or thukpa.
Day 6: Crossing Sela Pass to the Sacred Valley of Tawang
Drive from Dirang to Tawang
After breakfast, continue your ascent towards Tawang. The 5-6 hour drive is one of the most spectacular in India, culminating in the crossing of the formidable Sela Pass at 13,700 ft.
Stop at Sela Pass & Sela Lake
Pause at the top of Sela Pass, marked by a colorful gate and Buddhist prayer flags. The stunning, often partially frozen, Sela Lake is right by the pass. It's a spiritual and breathtakingly beautiful spot.
Visit Jaswant Garh War Memorial
On your descent from Sela Pass, stop at the Jaswant Garh War Memorial, dedicated to the heroic Indian soldier, Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, who fought in the 1962 Indo-China War. It's a very moving and patriotic place.
Arrive and Check-in at Tawang
Arrive in Tawang (altitude approx. 10,000 ft) and check into your hotel. The first view of the Tawang valley with the monastery perched on a hill is unforgettable. Rest and acclimatize.
Day 7: Monasteries and Legends of Tawang
Visit Tawang Monastery (Galden Namgyal Lhatse)
After breakfast, visit the magnificent Tawang Monastery, the second largest in the world. Explore its vast complex, the main prayer hall with a giant statue of Lord Buddha, and the museum which houses precious scriptures and artifacts. The panoramic view of the valley from here is stunning.
Giant Buddha Statue & Tawang War Memorial
Visit the Giant Buddha Statue for another spectacular viewpoint of Tawang. Afterwards, pay your respects at the Tawang War Memorial, which commemorates the soldiers of the 1962 war. The evening light and sound show is highly recommended.
Lunch at a Local Cafe
Have lunch at a local eatery in Tawang market. This is a great opportunity to try authentic Monpa cuisine.
Romantic Evening Stroll
Spend the evening at leisure. Take a romantic walk through the town, browse the local market for souvenirs like prayer wheels or traditional masks, and enjoy the crisp mountain air.
Day 8: Descent from the Heavens: Tawang to Bomdila
Drive from Tawang to Bomdila
After an early breakfast, begin your journey back. The drive to Bomdila takes about 6-7 hours. Breaking the journey here instead of Dirang offers a different experience and shortens the final day's drive to Guwahati.
Check-in at Bomdila
Arrive in Bomdila, the headquarters of the West Kameng district. Check into your hotel and relax.
Explore Bomdila Monastery
If time and energy permit, visit the Bomdila Monastery (Gentse Gaden Rabgyel Lling Monastery). It's a smaller, more peaceful monastery compared to Tawang's and offers lovely views of the town and surrounding hills.
Day 9: Farewell Northeast: Bomdila to Guwahati
Drive from Bomdila to Guwahati Airport
Have a very early breakfast and start your final drive back to Guwahati Airport (GAU). This is a long journey of about 8-9 hours. You will descend from the mountains back into the plains of Assam.
Lunch on the Way
Stop for lunch at a clean restaurant (dhaba) on the highway in Assam.
